Dusseldorf could be the ideal destination for travellers with an interest in art and culture, according to the local tourist board.

The German city is home to 26 museums and more than 100 galleries which will be hosting a series of events and exhibitions over the coming months.

At the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfalen, guests can see pieces of modern art by the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Kandinsky, or visit a display from 22 October focusing on eight female artists who contributed to the European cultural landscape in the 1920s and 30s.

The Museum Kunstpalast will launch a new show on 24 September featuring 400 works by artists belonging to Dusseldorf's School of Painting.

An exhibition looking at El Greco's influence on German expressionists such as Oskar Kokoschka and Max Oppenheimer will open at the same venue on 28 April 2012.

The Dusseldorf Opera House will celebrate its reopening with two operas and one ballet between 2 and 4 December this year, while the Schauspielhaus theatre offers a range of shows and productions performed on four stages.
