Travellers considering a break in New York towards the end of the year and during the Christmas period have been encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.

Marketing organisation NYC & Company pointed out that demand for hotels and other tourism products in the city reaches its 'highest peak' between Thanksgiving - which falls on the fourth Thursday in November - and Christmas.

Numerous events take place in New York at this time of year, such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Centre on 30 November.

Radio City Music Hall's Christmas Spectacular, a show featuring performances by the Rockettes, among other highlights, will run from 11 November to 2 January.

This year is also one of significant milestones in New York City, including the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and the 125th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty.

George Fertitta, chief executive of NYC & Company, said: "There's no better way to experience the energy and vibrancy of the five boroughs than during the annual holiday season.

"Travel to the city peaks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, providing visitors with festive and unique experiences that stay with them long after they leave."
