Travellers who have a passion for adventurous pursuits will find plenty to pique their interest in Bali, according to Lonely Planet.

Adam Skolnick, the publisher's Indonesia author, recommended a number of activities and attractions on the island, such as scaling a volcano that has a special significance for locals.

'Gunung Agung, Bali's sacred volcano, looms over almost the entire island on clear days. It stands over 10,000 feet high and summiting the giant at sunrise is an epic experience,' he said.

Mr Skolnick also encouraged visitors to see the Besakih temple complex, which is the site of an annual pilgrimage for many Balinese people every year.

'Other spectacular temples worth a visit include Uluwatu, on the cliffs of Bali's Bukit peninsula, and Tanah Lot, set on the rugged west coast,' the writer added.

Holidaymakers looking for some nightlife during their time in Indonesia could pay a visit to the resort community of Seminyak, while those interested in seeing some of the region's idyllic beaches were encouraged to head to Bali's east coast.
