Access to Brazil 'improving'

Access to Brazil is steadily improving for international travellers, according to Embratur, the country's official tourism board.

Marco Lomanto, director of products and destinations for the agency, noted that British Airways now operates six weekly flights to Brazilian cities.

He also revealed that visitor numbers are increasing and encouraged people to discover some of the nation's lesser-known areas as well as its famous cities.

'Everyone knows about Rio de Janeiro, but we have a lot on the north-east coast of Brazil, [such as] Fortaleza, Recife and Bahia,' said Mr Lomanto.

'It has beautiful beaches, cultural heritage and it is a nice place to visit because the sea is always warm, it has nice white sand and there are also direct flights.'

Some major sporting events are set to boost the profile of Brazil over the coming years, with the Fifa World Cup due to take place in the country in 2014, followed by the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro two years later.
