Reykjavik named Unesco City of Literature

Reykjavik named Unesco City of Literature
6 Sep 2011

Unesco has granted Reykjavik official City of Literature status.

The title is the result of the Icelandic destination's production of stories in the medieval period, which emerged in the form of sagas.

It will be officially announced at the Reykjavik International Literature Festival this month.

Iceland's capital is the fifth international recipient of City of Literature status after Edinburgh, Iowa, Melbourne and Dublin.

Reykjavik's profile in this particular field of the arts will be boosted further in October when it becomes the first Nordic location to be a guest of honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Travellers interested in taking in some of the cultural experiences on offer in Iceland could also consider visiting the 13th annual Airwaves festival, tickets for which are still available.

The event, which will run from 12 to 16 October this year, was described by David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine as 'the hippest long weekend on the annual music festival calendar'.
