Flights to North America have been proving popular among people travelling from London Heathrow in recent months, airport operator BAA has revealed.

The company released figures showing that 71,000 more passengers flew to North America in August this year than in the same month in 2010.

Routes to Montreal and Detroit saw year-on-year traffic increases of 50% and 42% respectively, figures that were described as 'particularly notable' given the impact of Hurricane Irene, which hit the east coast of the US towards the end of last month.

The success of Heathrow's services to North America contributed to the busiest August on record at the airport this year, with some 6.6m people using the base.

In another record for the month, 82.2% of seats were filled on departing flights.

Overall, BAA's UK airports handled 10.7m travellers last month - 0.2% more than in August 2010.

Colin Matthews, the operator's chief executive officer, said: 'Together with our airline customers, we served a record number of passengers this summer.

'Our passengers tell us we are delivering a better service for them and we are investing £1bn a year in new passenger facilities.'
