Rugby World Cup could provide lasting New Zealand tourism boost

Rugby World Cup could provide lasting New Zealand tourism boost
13 Sep 2011

Post Office Travel Money has highlighted the possibility that the 2011 Rugby World Cup could provide a long-term tourism boost for host country New Zealand.

The company revealed that the New Zealand dollar experienced a 23% increase in sales in July compared to the same month last year, followed by 73% growth in August.

Organisers of the Rugby World Cup recently revised visitor estimates up from 85,000 to 95,000, with approximately 25,000 of this group thought to be from the UK.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, said New Zealand's revival on the back of the tournament is 'encouraging news' for the country, which was hit by an earthquake earlier this year.

She added: 'The growth in demand for New Zealand dollars adds weight to suggestions that sports tourism is the travel industry's fastest-growing sector and shows that UK rugby fans are particularly committed.

'The big question is whether the Rugby World Cup will help to fuel tourism longer term as the last British Lions tour did in 2005, helping to make that a record-breaking year for New Zealand.'

Another development that could boost interest in the country is the release of the film adaptation of The Hobbit, which is due to come out in two parts in December 2012 and 2013.
