Icelandair announces summer 2012 flights to Akureyri
15 Sep 2011

Icelandair has announced a new route that will give travellers the opportunity to visit Akureyri in northern Iceland next summer.

Up to four weekly flights to the city will be available from Keflavik airport - the country's main international hub near Reykjavik - between 7 June and 30 September 2012.

The service has been designed to facilitate easy connections to Akureyri, with UK travellers able to book and check bags all the way to the destination from London Heathrow, Manchester and Glasgow via Keflavik.

Those coming from London will be able to leave Heathrow at 13:00 and arrive in northern Iceland at 17:10 local time.

Icelandair chief executive Birkir Holm Gudnasson said: 'It's exciting to add Akureyri as a new destination in our network and into the hub and spoke system which goes through Keflavik airport.

'With its addition, we are opening up a new way for travellers from the UK and other European and North American cities in our network to travel to Akureyri.'

Mr Gudnasson also noted that the route will provide easier access to the 'natural beauty' of northern Iceland, a region that is known for outdoor activities such as whale watching.
