Epic journeys across the United States have long been popular among intrepid human travellers, but it seems that such daring expeditions also appeal to adventurers of the feline kind.

Willow, a cat that went missing from a family home in Colorado five years ago, has been found prowling the streets of Manhattan in New York, more than 1,800 miles away.

Staff at a pet shelter near where the cat was found discovered that she belonged to the Squires family of Boulder, Colorado, after scanning a microchip embedded in the animal's neck.

It remains a mystery how Willow managed to make her way halfway across one of the world's biggest countries, but it was clear to animal care workers that she had found someone to look after her in New York.

'The cat was in very good condition, clean, a little chunky,' Richard Gentles, a spokesman for Animal Care and Control of New York City, told Reuters.

'Obviously someone was taking care of her.'

Plans are now in place to get the family pet on a flight back to Colorado so she can be reunited with her owners.
