California aquarium unveils Open Sea galleries

Monterey Bay Aquarium is offering some new experiences for visitors following the transformation of the attraction's Outer Bay area into the Open Sea galleries.

The new exhibits provide an insight into various aspects of life in the ocean, from epic migrations of marine creatures to the ceaseless movement and activity of aquatic species.

In three different galleries, visitors can see new additions to Monterey Bay Aquarium including tufted puffins, sandbar sharks and deep-sea jellyfish, as well as guest favourites such as stingrays, sea turtles and even great white sharks.

Some of the displays are paired with art installations that highlight the threats and ocean conservation issues that are putting some open-sea species at risk.

Senior exhibit developer Jaci Tomulonis said: 'The open sea is a dynamic place where life is in constant motion. Complex forces drive currents that, in turn, influence living conditions for ocean animals.

'The Open Sea galleries bring our visitors into the heart of this extraordinary environment through transformed live exhibits, new multimedia experiences and surprising artistic elements.'

Monterey is situated south of San Francisco - a city accessible via international flights - on California's Pacific coast.
