Art lovers visiting Toronto this winter will have the chance to see a major display focusing on Marc Chagall and other influential 20th-century artists.

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) will present Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde: Masterpieces from the Collection of the Centre Pompidou from 18 October this year until 15 January 2012.

'Lush, colourful and dreamlike' pieces by Chagall taken from the collection of Paris' Centre Pompidou will feature in the show, alongside examples of work by other Russian modernists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Kasimir Malevich and Natalia Goncharova.

Visitors will be able to see paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs and films at the AGO, which will illustrate how Chagall's Russian heritage informed his creations and how he at turns supported and opposed wider movements in 20th-century art.

Also coming to the Toronto gallery this year is a display of books and posters created in Russia between 1913 and 1940, which will open on 8 October.
