Etihad launching onboard Wi-Fi this year

Etihad launching onboard Wi-Fi this year

Etihad Airways has confirmed that it will launch wireless internet access on select flight routes before the end of the year.

Speaking at the World Broadband Forum in Paris, the airline's chief executive offer James Hogan said that two aircraft will provide onboard Wi-Fi by December this year and five planes will offer the facility by March 2012.

Three of the five liners will be Airbus A330-300s operating flights between Abu Dhabi and London, Frankfurt, Geneva, Munich and Paris.

Mr Hogan also revealed that Etihad is close to settling on an internet connectivity solution that will be rolled out fleet-wide in the coming years.

The chief executive pointed out that travellers are increasingly expecting broadband internet access to come as standard on all flights, but stressed the importance of careful investment in technology and new innovations.

'Annually, airlines invest billions in aircraft and millions in inflight entertainment and other trappings, years before the aircraft enter service,' he said.

'Changes in technology move at the speed of light ... There is an ever-present danger of investing heavily in a system or hardware that is likely to be obsolete by the time it rolls off the production line.'
