Museum of London to present Dickens exhibition
30 Sep 2011

The Museum of London will this year launch an exhibition exploring the importance of England's capital city in the work of Charles Dickens.

Dickens and London will open on 9 December and run until 10 June 2012.

Using sound and projections, the display will take visitors on a journey back to the Victorian era and focus on some of the important social and cultural issues of the time, such as childhood mortality and the gap between wealth and poverty.

Paintings, photographs, costume and other items will illustrate some of the themes and ideas that Dickens incorporated into his work.

The exhibition will also include rare manuscripts in the author's own hand and a specially commissioned film by documentary maker William Raban exploring the similarities between nighttime London today and 150 years ago.

Guests at the Museum of London can also browse through collections exploring everything from Roman and Saxon cultures to dress, fashion and decorative arts in the capital.
