Sri Lanka 'best-value long-haul destination'

Sri Lanka 'best-value long-haul destination'
30 Sep 2011

Recent price falls mean that several long-haul destinations are currently offering good value, with the steepest reductions occurring in Sri Lanka, according to Post Office Travel Money.

The organisation released a report showing that the island nation's resort costs have fallen by a third this year compared to 2010.

Sri Lanka is now 38% cheaper than Thailand, its nearest rival, which vies with Vietnam for second place on the list of the most affordable long-haul hotspots for UK travellers.

Post Office Travel Money surveyed the cost of a 'basket' of ten tourist items in 28 destinations and found that prices have fallen in 13 countries.

The list of nations that are cheaper than last year includes South Africa, where tourist expenses have gone down following the World Cup in 2010.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, said: 'Things are looking up for hard-pressed holidaymakers.

'After a summer when the weak UK pound bought less holiday cash in Europe, tourists heading further afield for winter sun can look forward to seeing their pounds stretch further in most long-haul destinations.'
