People planning a trip to Rome over the coming months can check out an exhibition exploring some of the artistic, architectural and cultural trends that defined the Italian capital in the 16th century.

Entitled The Renaissance in Rome, the show will be based at Palazzo Sciarra from 25 October until 25 February 2012.

Visitors will be able to browse through seven distinct sections, charting developments in the 1500s ranging from the creativity and classical trappings of the High Renaissance to a form of art that was inspired by religious spirituality.

Highlights to look out for include a self portrait and a study of Fedra Inghirami by Raphael and a painting of Cardinal Reginald Pole by Michelangelo.

The display will also feature a three-dimensional reconstruction of the Sistine Chapel and artworks by the likes of Perin del Vaga and Francesco Salviati.

Another experience on offer to travellers heading to Rome this year is visiting the famous Cinecitta Film Studios, which have been opened to the public for the first time in their history.

A special exhibition detailing the story and heritage of Cinecitta will continue until 30 November.
