Gatwick launches 'vision for the future'
18 Oct 2011
London Gatwick has published a draft masterplan setting out its strategy up to 2020, by which time the airport hopes to be capable of handling 40m passengers a year.
The base's operating company has already launched a £1bn investment programme to support future growth, with a 19-lane security area opening this week to give passengers a quicker and more efficient experience.
A £75m expansion of the north terminal is due for completion next week, providing new check-in desks and baggage facilities.
The draft masterplan, which will be open to public consultation for three months, also includes details of long-term goals such as enabling the base to host Airbus A380 flights and reconfiguring the north terminal's international departure lounge.
Other strategies include increasing traffic during off-peak periods to make the most of runway capacity and bringing in newer, larger aircraft with the capacity to carry more travellers.
Chief executive Stewart Wingate said Gatwick's ambition is to expand and become 'London's airport of choice' over the coming years.
'Today we set out our vision for the future and how we can grow to handle 40m passengers by 2020,' he added.
'Our plans focus on continuing to improve service levels by investing in the airport, our employees and in the communities we serve.'
