People planning a trip to Edinburgh over the coming months will have the opportunity to check out a new exhibition opening in the city this weekend.

A showcase of work by the eminent Scottish painter FCB Cadell will open at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art on Saturday (22 October) and run until 18 March 2012.

The display is part of a series dedicated to the group known as the Scottish Colourists, which comprised Cadell, JD Fergusson, GL Hunter and SJ Peploe.

All four artists spent time in France early in their careers and took inspiration from various influential figures and movements, from Manet and the Impressionists to Matisse and the Fauves.

The forthcoming exhibition - which is the first showcase of Cadell's work in a public gallery for 70 years - will include examples of the types of paintings for which the artist was famous, such as portrayals of Edinburgh New Town interiors and strikingly coloured still-life pieces and figure studies.

Peploe and Fergusson will be the focus of shows coming to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in autumn 2012 and 2013 respectively.
