Richard Serra exhibition opens in San Francisco
28 Oct 2011
San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art has launched an exhibition featuring work by Richard Serra, whose large steel sculptures have made him an important figure in contemporary art.
Rather than revisiting the pieces that made Serra famous, the display focuses on a lesser-known but no less striking aspect of his work - drawing.
Visitors can trace the evolution of the artist's ideas and methods since the 1970s, when he began making large abstractions designed to change the relationship between drawing and architectural space.
Some of his works feature dark and densely layered forms, which make viewers feel as if their sense of mass and gravity are being manipulated and create an experience that is 'as visceral as it is visual', according to the MoMA.
The exhibition, which is the first ever retrospective of Serra's drawings, also includes some of the artist's sculptures in lead, rubber and fibreglass.
It opened on 15 October and will run until 16 January 2012.
