Qantas resumes normal flight operations
1 Nov 2011
Qantas began returning its flight operations to normal yesterday (31 October), following an order from the Australian government for striking employees to return to work.
Workplace relations tribunal Fair Work Australia (FWA) granted the application from the government, leading to the termination of all industrial action by the Australian Licensed Engineers Union, the Transport Workers Union, and the Australian and International Pilots Union.
There will now be 21 days of negotiation between the airline and the unions, during which time no strikes can take place.
FWA will take control of the situation and decide on a settlement if no agreement can be reached over the next three weeks.
Qantas chief executive officer Alan Joyce said the termination of industrial action is a 'good outcome' that will provide reassurance for passengers and staff.
He added: 'Our focus is bringing our schedule back to normal as soon as possible. Safety will remain our first priority at all times.'
