Travellers visiting Chicago during the winter season will be 'dazzled' by some of the festive sights and experiences on offer, according to the city's culture and tourism office.

A host of popular annual traditions will be returning to the destination over the coming months, such as the 98th Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Daley Plaza on 23 November.

Visitors can also head to Millennium Park to check out the site's ice rink, which is open to the public for free but charges $10 (£6.30) for skate rental.

The rink, which is now in its 11th year and welcomes some 100,000 skaters annually, will be open from 18 November to 11 March 2012, weather permitting.

People hoping to pick up some gifts during holidays in Chicago before Christmas can pay a visit to Daley Plaza to explore a traditional German-style market selling handmade gifts, unique ornaments and other items.

There will also be potato pancakes, goulash, mulled wine and other hot treats on offer to keep browsers warm.

Another event worth checking out this winter is the 11th annual Winter WonderFest, which will come to Navy Pier from 2 December to 8 January 2012.

Visitors can enjoy 170,000 square feet of rides, inflatable slides, seasonal illuminations and other attractions.
