Roddy Doyle returning to Dublin's Abbey Theatre
2 Nov 2011
People planning a Christmas break in Dublin this year will be able to see a show that represents the return of Irish author and dramatist Roddy Doyle to the Abbey Theatre.
Doyle is known for works such as The Commitments, which was adapted into a film in the early 1990s, and Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, which won the 1993 Booker Prize.
He will be returning to the Dublin theatre scene this year with his version of The Government Inspector, a satirical comedy by Nikolai Gogol, which will open on 24 November and run until 28 January 2012.
The play tells of a small Russian town due to be visited by the titular inspector, a prospect that sees the local mayor, judge and chief of police frantically trying to tidy up their affairs before the examination.
Also coming to the Abbey Theatre this year is B for Baby by Carmel Winters, which opens today (2 November) and will run until 19 November.
The Irish Times named the show the best new play of the year in 2010.
