UK travellers spending record amounts in Singapore

New figures show that spending by UK travellers in Singapore reached record levels in the first half of the year.

Britons spent some S$282m (£138.6m) in the Asian city-state during the first six months of 2011, mainly on accommodation, food and shopping.

Over 231,000 people from the UK travelled to Singapore in the period, more than from the US, Germany and Hong Kong.

The appeal of the destination has been boosted by the recent opening of several new hotels, restaurants and shops, as well as large attractions such as Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa.

Eunice Yeo, the Singapore Tourism Board's area director in northern and western Europe, said it was 'fantastic' that the city's changing skyline is proving so attractive to British holidaymakers.

She added: 'As Singapore has continued to evolve it has built more state-of-the-art facilities adding a wealth of options for visitors, meaning that they are staying longer than ever before.'

Next year, the destination will provide new experiences including the Gardens by the Bay and River Safari attractions.
