British adventurer Richard Harpham is set to embark on a 500-mile kayak journey across the state of New York that will showcase some of the region's finest scenery.

He has teamed up with the UK office of the New York State Division of Tourism to arrange the expedition, which will begin in April 2012 and last about a month.

Joined by fellow explorer Glenn Charles, Mr Harpham will set off from Niagara Falls and kayak along the Erie Canal, a Unesco World Heritage site.

After reaching Albany and joining the Hudson river, the pair will paddle south towards Manhattan and end their voyage at the Statue of Liberty.

Mr Harpham said one of the aims of the trip is to inspire people to 'explore their dreams' and embark on new adventures.

'It will also be a fantastic journey across some of New York State's most beautiful scenery and both Glenn and I are looking forward to the challenge,' he added.

A dedicated website and social media feeds will be set up so members of the public can follow the expedition.
