The US is once again offering significant savings for British travellers planning to head overseas to do some Christmas shopping this year, according to Post Office Travel Money.

Despite the pound's 25% fall in value against the dollar over the past four years, consumers can still find prices that are up to 62% cheaper if they head across the Atlantic.

Post Office Travel Money surveyed the cost of ten 'must-have' items - including an iPod nano, a Ralph Lauren jumper and a selection of toys - and found that they added up to £1,296 in London, compared to the equivalent of £716 in New York and £710 in Las Vegas.

The potential to make savings is even bigger in Boston, where the Christmas shopping bill of £664 is nearly half that of the English capital.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, noted that Boston is particularly cheap because sales tax is lower than in New York.

She added: 'Prices in the USA are so much lower than in London that two people could pool their duty-free allowances of £390 and have more than enough to buy all ten items in Boston, New York or Las Vegas.'
