Explore ancient Macedonia at the Louvre
6 Dec 2011
People planning city breaks in Paris over the coming weeks will have the opportunity to see a major exhibition at the Louvre Museum exploring the history of ancient Macedonia.
The show, entitled In the Kingdom of Alexander the Great, will remain open until 16 January 2012.
It includes nearly 500 pieces, most of which are being presented in France for the first time, representing periods ranging from the 15th century BC to the era of the Roman Empire.
One of the themes of the exhibition is the rise of Macedonia against the Greek city-states as a result of the political savvy of rulers such as Alexander the Great.
Objects including sculptures, vases, ceramics, jewellery and warrior wreaths provide an insight into the kingdom and its culture, customs and beliefs.
Travellers staying in hotels in Paris over the Christmas period can also see a showcase of treasures from China's Forbidden City, which will be open at the Louvre until 9 January 2012.
