Chicago is a 'four-season destination', offering activities and experiences for visitors throughout the year, according to the local promotional agency.

Cathleen Domanico, executive director of tourism at the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, said the destination is like many big cities in that it can cater for all sorts of guests.

'Our destination drivers are architecture, dining, theatre, shopping, our cultural institutions and of course our nightlife,' she added.

People looking for evening entertainment in Chicago were encouraged to explore the local theatre scene, which has been honoured with five Tony awards and provides a choice of productions, including Broadway shows.

Another popular activity in the city is shopping, which Ms Domanico described as a 'major draw'.

One of the main retail areas is the Magnificent Mile, which is home to outlets for a range of high-profile and luxury brands.

Chicago hosted its first shopping festival in August this year and the event is set to return in 2012.
