Holidays 'still a necessity for Brits'

Holidays 'still a necessity for Brits'

The majority of Britons still see holidays as a necessary part of their lives, despite the ongoing financial challenges facing many consumers, according to a survey by YouGov.

Carried out on behalf of First Data Merchant Solutions, the poll found that nearly two-thirds of people are planning to take a holiday lasting at least five days in 2012.

The remaining respondents (35%) said they do not currently have any plans to go away - the same proportion as in last year's study.

Of those who are intending to take a break, half (49%) will be going overseas at least once and 29% are set to visit destinations in the UK once or more.

A quarter (26%) of respondents admitted they are concerned about the financial climate but planning a trip anyway, while 6% said they are not worried about the economy and have already booked their flights, hotels and other holiday components.

Tony Mooney, business development director at First Data Merchant Solutions, said: 'Despite the ongoing austerity, consumers are continuing to spend on the basics, for which the annual holiday remains included.'

Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer said the industry association's own research indicates that consumers will cut back on meals out and home improvements before travel.
