New York's Lake Placid ranked among top winter destinations

National Geographic Magazine has named Lake Placid, a resort village in the US state of New York, as one of its top trips for 2012.
Situated in the Adirondack mountain range, the destination hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics and now offers all sorts of unusual activities for visitors, including rides down an icy bobsled run with a professional driver and brakeman.
Travellers could time their trip to Lake Placid to coincide with the 2012 Bobsled and Skeleton World Championships, which will take place between 18 and 26 February.
The recognition from National Geographic Magazine was welcomed by the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority, whose chairman Patrick Barrett said the choice of activities available in the resort separates it from other winter destinations.
'From skiing and sliding to skating and taking in the hospitality of Main Street and world-class shows, the wide array of activities in and around Lake Placid continues to make the region a favourite destination amongst winter travellers,' he added.
Other locations on the list of top winter trips for 2012 include Petra and the Wadi Rum valley in Jordan, Cuba and the coast of Namibia.
