Post Office: £756m of foreign money available for festive shopping
19 Dec 2011

Post Office Travel Money has released a report suggesting that the equivalent of nearly £756m of unused foreign currency is available to Brits struggling to finance their Christmas shopping this year.

The company's research found that the total amount of money brought back from overseas trips averages £47.86 per person.

Nearly a fifth (18%) of travellers have more than £100 worth of foreign currency yet to be exchanged into sterling, while almost one in ten (9%) survey respondents said they have brought the equivalent of more than £150 home from recent breaks.

Only 28% of holidaymakers polled said they change unused money back into pounds when they return to the UK.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, said the results were surprising in these 'cash-strapped times'.

She added: 'Our research indicated that the average adult usually spends £276 on Christmas gifts - £172 of this on children - and the money stashed away in drawers could go some way to paying for presents.'

The company's figures suggest that the amount of euros that have been exchanged into pounds this Christmas is 10% down on last year.
