Art enthusiasts staying in Madrid hotels over the coming months can check out a major exhibition of works from the State Hermitage Museum of St Petersburg, Russia.

The display of 120 items opened at the Prado Museum in Spain's capital city last month and will run until 25 March 2012.

Visitors can see pieces representing eras from the fifth century BC to the 20th century, including archaeological artefacts, examples of the decorative arts, paintings, sculptures and drawings.

Highlights to look out for include portraits of Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Nicholas I, and pieces such as Saint Sebastian by Titian, The Lute Player by Caravaggio and Three Men at a Table by Velazquez.

Modern art enthusiasts can see three canvases by Picasso and other works by the likes of Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, Gauguin and Matisse.

Earlier this year, the State Hermitage Museum hosted a showcase of items from the Prado Museum that became the most successful exhibition in the Russian institution's history, with more than 600,000 visitors.
