New Shipwrecked series could boost Cook Islands tourism

The Cook Islands could soon receive more interest from international travellers as a result of the new Channel 4 reality television series Shipwrecked: The Island.

A group of castaways were sent to a remote island in the Pacific archipelago for eight weeks to film the show, which sees the participants competing for votes each week with the aim of becoming tribe leader.

Carmel Beattie, chief executive of the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation, said the destination was 'so excited' to welcome back Shipwrecked, which serves as a showcase for the region's sights and attractions.

'The programme offers a platform to showcase the Cook Islands' breathtaking natural scenery and encourage visitors to explore everything that the islands have to offer,' she added.

Shipwrecked: The Island is currently being shown on E4 on Tuesday evenings and on Channel 4 on Sunday afternoons.

Travellers interested in seeing the Cook Islands for themselves can catch flights to Rarotonga, the most populous isle in the archipelago, with Air New Zealand.
