London events to commemorate polar expeditions

The Royal Geographical Society has announced details of a series of events set to take place in London next year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to the South Pole.
At the heart of the programme is the free exhibition With Scott to the Pole, which will run on weekdays from 16 January to 30 March 2012.
Visitors will be able to see a selection of images captured by photographer Herbert Ponting that provide an insight into the ill-fated mission, which ended with the entire party dying on their return journey after reaching the pole.
The Royal Geographical Society will also host a showcase entitled Antarctic Exploration from 5 to 12 March next year, which will feature items including original copies of the South Polar Times and an 'in-house magazine' produced by Captain Scott during his earlier Discovery expedition.
On 26 March, British Film Institute curator Jan Faull will give a talk about the challenges that faced Ponting as he attempted to capture photographs and moving images in an alien environment.
All of the events will take place at the Royal Geographical Society on Exhibition Road in London.
