Post Office Travel Money has revealed the destinations it expects to prove popular among Britons making spur-of-the-moment bookings over the Christmas and new year period.

The organisation pointed out that post-Christmas blues and family friction traditionally contribute to a spike in holiday reservations during the festive season, with forecasts of bad weather expected to accelerate the trend this year.

Immediately after 25 December 2010, Post Office Travel Money experienced a significant increase in currency sales, with destinations in the eurozone attracting the most demand, followed by the USA, Australia, Egypt and New Zealand.

Ski holidays, long-haul adventures and winter sun breaks also appear to interest travellers making bookings during this period, with Switzerland, Canada, Thailand, South Africa and Dubai completing last year's top ten.

Commenting on some of the savings currently on offer, Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, said: 'There are great deals to US cities like New York and Boston after Christmas and early in the new year, not to mention a glut of new hotel beds in Las Vegas that are keeping costs down.'

Ms Munro also noted that Thailand is offering discounts for late bookers but warned that Switzerland is now more expensive than ever as a result of the strength of the franc against sterling.
