Travellers planning a trip to Chicago have been encouraged to explore the local culinary scene and discover some of the diverse experiences on offer.

Cathleen Domanico, executive director of tourism for the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, noted that the destination is well known for its hot dogs and pizza, but has much more to offer than fast food.

The city is home to Alinea, which was ranked sixth in the San Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants list this year, one of only two American establishments to feature in the top ten along with Per Se in New York.

'[Chicago] is a great dining destination, so people no longer think of it just for hot dogs and pizza,' said Ms Domanico.

'They come for our world-class dining and gourmet food.'

A series of events will give holidaymakers the opportunity to sample the city's cuisine next year, starting with Restaurant Week in February, which will be followed by the return of Chicago Gourmet, a three-day festival in August.
