Lonely Planet recommends 'intoxicating' Goa
30 Dec 2011
Lonely Planet has encouraged travellers planning beach holidays with a difference to consider Goa in India.
Joe Bindloss, one of the destination guide publisher's writers, said the coastal region boasts an 'intoxicating' combination of attractions and experiences.
Visitors can sample some of the curry dishes served along Goa's palm-fringed coastline while enjoying the warm weather.
'Settled by the Portuguese back in 1510, India's favourite beach destination offers an intoxicating blend of sun, sea, sand and Indian spice,' added Mr Bindloss.
'Think of it as India's answer to the Algarve.'
The Lonely Planet author recommended areas such as the stretch of beach between Candolim and Anjuna, a tourist centre boasting hundreds of hotels, resorts and other amenities.
Visitors can also head to the beaches south of Panaji, around Cavelossim and Palolem, where they can experience the laidback, tropical atmosphere that first attracted holidaymakers to the region, according to Mr Bindloss.
People interested in learning more about the culture and history of Goa can visit attractions and cultural institutions such as the State Museum and the Archaeological Museum.
