Helsinki assumes role of World Design Capital

People planning a trip to Finland this year will have the opportunity to be part of a range of events and experiences in Helsinki as the city takes on the role of World Design Capital 2012.
Over the next 12 months, the destination will host a series of design-oriented activities and exhibitions aimed at locals and international visitors alike.
Among the highlights for travellers to look out for is a display exploring the visual imagery of films shot in the Finnish capital between the 1930s and 1960s, which will open at the Helsinki City Museum on 15 February.
The show will feature photographs, historical items, costumes, film clips and more.
International airline Finnair is set to take part in Helsinki's World Design Capital activities, with Jarkko Konttinen, vice president of brand and marketing, noting that many visitors will have their first experience of Finnish design during their initial flight to the city.
'We look forward to giving them a great first impression,' he added. 'Helsinki really is emerging as a nexus of creativity and cultural exchange, at the heart of a New Silk Road between East and West.'
Turin in Italy served as World Design Capital in 2008, followed by Seoul, South Korea two years ago.
