Travellers visiting San Francisco have been encouraged to look beyond the city's famous urban attractions and discover some of its more rural experiences.

Angela Jackson, media relations international director at the San Francisco Travel Association, said the diverse range of sights and activities on offer to visitors makes the US destination completely unique.

Highlighting some of the pursuits on offer to holidaymakers, Ms Jackson recommended a gentle hike along the remodelled Lands End trail.

During the walk, tourists can see the ruins of an abandoned bath house and old shipwrecks before taking in views of the Golden Gate Bridge from cliff-top vantage points.

'The tour ends with a walk through the multi-ethnic enclave of Clement Street, a tour to a San Francisco hat shop and then a drive through Golden Gate Park,' added Ms Jackson.

Popular inner-city areas to explore include Fisherman's Wharf, a waterfront neighbourhood encompassing numerous restaurants, shops and the departure point for the ferry crossing to Alcatraz Island.
