Renaissance portraits on display in New York
4 Jan 2012
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is now offering a new experience for culture vultures following the opening of a major exhibition last month.
A display of Renaissance portraits was unveiled at the institution on 21 December and will run until 18 March 2012.
The show explores what organisers describe as 'the first great age of portraiture' in early Renaissance Italy, where the art form was used for purposes such as recording a family member's images for future generations, celebrating a woman's beauty and honouring a prince or warrior.
Art lovers planning to book New York hotels for a city break over the coming months can see approximately 160 works in the exhibition, including pieces by celebrated figures such as Donatello, Botticelli and Ghirlandaio in media including painting, sculpture and manuscript illumination.
Also on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a collection of paintings and drawings from Renaissance Venice, which will remain on display until 5 February this year.
