In addition to its natural spectacles and outdoor activities, New Zealand offers a sense of safety and security for British travellers, according to the national tourism agency.

Gregg Anderson, general manager of western long-haul markets for Tourism New Zealand, pointed out that the country welcomed more than 230,000 visitors from the UK last year.

This figure makes Britain the nation's second biggest source market for overseas visitors behind Australia.

Discussing the reasons behind the trend, Mr Anderson said: 'I think UK travellers feel safe in New Zealand as it's relatively small, accessible and a really easy country to travel around.'

He went on to note that British visitors do not have to worry about a language barrier, while the economy is relatively stable and the crime rate is low.

New Zealand - which can be reached by catching flights to Auckland and Wellington, among other cities - is famous for natural attractions like Milford Sound and adventurous outdoor activities such as bungee jumping and white-water rafting.
