Australia's Northern Territory prepares for 2012 events
5 Jan 2012

Tourism NT, the promotional agency representing Australia's Northern Territory, has highlighted some of the diverse and unusual events that will be coming to the region in 2012.

Travellers exploring the state will be able to discover local history and culture through annual traditions such as the Merrepen Arts Festival, which will take place in Nauiyu, 240km south-west of Darwin, from 1 to 3 June.

Due to mark its 25th anniversary this year, the festival will include traditional music and dance performances, bush tucker tasting sessions, a sports carnival, art sales and more.

Also set to return during the southern hemisphere's winter is the Alice Springs Beanie Festival, which will turn beanie hats into works of art.

Holidaymakers visiting Alice Springs between 22 and 25 June can get into the spirit of the event by wearing their own beanie while enjoying music, crafts displays, workshops and gala evenings.

Other highlights to look out for include the Darwin Festival, which will celebrate the diversity of the Northern Territory in the region's capital city from 9 to 26 August.
