Dominican Republic gets 15th Blue Flag beach
5 Jan 2012

The Dominican Republic is now home to 15 Blue Flag beaches following the presentation of the accolade to a stretch of seafront at the Barcelo Bavaro resort.

Its latest achievement means the destination now boasts more Blue Flags than any other Latin American country.

A number of developments contributed to the award, including the introduction of measures to ensure that the beach's waters will not become polluted.

The resort has also provided a ramp for disabled visitors, delineated swimming areas with buoys and installed new bathrooms.

A recycling programme and environmental department have been set up to ensure that the beach is properly managed and remains as eco-friendly as possible.

The Dominican Republic welcomes more than 220,000 British visitors every year, many of whom visit the destination for its golf courses, beaches and marinas, which are among the biggest in the Caribbean.

According to the local tourist board, the country created the world's first whale sanctuary and has set up protection zones for more than 20 per cent of its land and coastal areas.
