Lonely Planet: Crime thrillers boosting interest in Sweden
5 Jan 2012

Recent crime thrillers such as Stieg Larsson's novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its subsequent movie adaptations have boosted interest in travel to Sweden, where the story is set, according to Lonely Planet.

Stockholm, the capital of the Scandinavian country, featured on the publisher's list of top cities to visit in 2012.

Tom Hall of Lonely Planet revealed that the popularity of books and films such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was an important factor in the city's inclusion in the list.

'[Stockholm is] really in there because of the rise in popularity of the crime thrillers that are being set in Sweden generally - it seems that destination is rising to prominence off the back of that,' he said.

The American adaptation of Larsson's novel, starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, opened in UK cinemas on 26 December 2011 and is set to be followed by a sequel.

Commenting on travel in general over the coming year, Mr Hall recommended visiting destinations that are not particularly well known for tourism despite having a lot to offer, such as Jordan, Cuba and Taiwan.
