Adventurous travellers looking for a new destination to visit this year have been encouraged to head to Africa to discover some of the experiences on offer in Kenya.

Angie Sloan, regional director of the Kenya Tourist Board, described the country as Africa's 'activity capital'.

She noted that visitors to the nation can explore a range of different environments and landscapes offering all sorts of pursuits.

'From glacial mountains with snow-capped peaks and dramatic river valleys to spectacular wide-open grasslands and coral reefs along the Indian Ocean, Kenya is a paradise for adventure junkies,' said Ms Sloan.

One of the most popular activities available to travellers is white-water rafting, with the Tana river, a leading location for the pastime, easily accessible from the national capital of Nairobi.

Northern Kenya was recently recommended in the Best in Travel 2012 guide from Lonely Planet, which listed the area as one of the top regions to explore this year along with the Italian island of Sicily, Borneo and Poitou-Charentes in France.
