Dublin recommended for architecture enthusiasts
11 Jan 2012

Architecture enthusiasts planning a trip to Ireland have been encouraged to take the opportunity to visit Dublin.

John Lahiffe, publicity manager at Tourism Ireland, said the city represents a combination of historic Georgian characteristics and modern aspects.

This diversity was among the factors that led to Dublin being nominated for the title of World Design Capital 2014 along with Bilbao in Spain and Cape Town in South Africa, although it eventually lost out to the latter.

Highlighting some of the experiences on offer to people visiting the Irish city, Mr Lahiffe noted that many old Georgian squares and houses have been maintained and are still open.

'Around the Fitzwilliam and Merrion squares, in the south centre of the city, there are buildings one can go into to appreciate what the Georgian lifestyle was like,' he said.

Other popular attractions in Dublin include the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Ireland and the Guinness Storehouse.
