London Gatwick has released figures showing that 2011 was a year of 'consistent growth' at the airport.

More than 33.6m people caught flights to and from the base between January and December last year, marking a 7.3% increase on the 31.3m travellers handled in the previous year.

In December 2011, passenger numbers increased by 19.8% year-on-year, but this was revised down to 4.3% when the impact of snow disruption at the end of 2010 was taken into account.

As well as handling more customers, Gatwick and airlines operating out of the airport improved the efficiency with which planes were filled throughout 2011, with average load factors reaching a new record of 76.4%.

The coming year will see several new routes made available from the base, with Korean Air set to launch a direct service to Seoul on 29 April and Air China planning to begin flights to Beijing in May.

Turkish Airlines expanded its network from Gatwick last month with the introduction of daily flights to Istanbul.
