Tourism Australia accrues 2m Facebook fans

Tourism Australia accrues 2m Facebook fans

Tourism Australia has announced the achievement of a 'major milestone' on Facebook, with 2m people now having signed up as fans of the agency.

This makes the organisation the largest Facebook account based in Australia and the social networking website's most popular tourism destination page, with almost three times as many followers as Las Vegas, its closest rival.

One of the major factors in taking the agency over the 2m mark was the short film initiative Project:12, which included a video of people celebrating New Year's Eve in Sydney as well as user-generated content captured on smartphones.

The campaign saw Tourism Australia's fan base expand with more than 85,000 new members in three days.

Andrew McEvoy, managing director of the agency, said the Facebook milestone is evidence of the country's enduring appeal across the world.

'To achieve 2m fans is remarkable and hasn't happened by accident,' he added.

'We engage very closely with our followers, listening and acting upon their feedback to deliver simple and effective content.'
