Birmingham airport has announced that it will be the first base outside London to offer a 'welcome spectacular' to people catching flights to the UK for the 2012 Olympic Games.

On their approach to the runway, passengers will see five giant Olympic rings on the new air traffic control tower, which can also be seen from the main road leading into Birmingham.

Furthermore, the airport will display themed pictograms along the taxiway and London 2012 branding will be used to decorate the headquarters building situated opposite the terminal.

Sebastian Coe, chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee, described the Olympic rings as an 'iconic symbol' that unites people from around the world and inspires athletes to perform at the highest level.

'To visitors travelling from around the world and arriving in Birmingham they will excite and inspire them about the Olympic Games taking place in the UK,' he added.

The West Midlands base is served by carriers including Flybe, KLM, British Airways and Air France.
