Flybe will expand the range of routes available to travellers based in northern England this summer with the introduction of flights to Bergen in Norway and the UK beach holiday hotspot of Newquay from Newcastle airport.

Due to begin on 5 May, the new links will boost the airline's summer schedule from the base to a total of eight services, providing 132 flights every week from north-east England.

The connection to Bergen, the second largest city in Norway after Oslo, is particularly significant as it will provide direct air access to a destination that already has close associations with Newcastle.

Dave Laws, the UK airport's chief executive officer, said: 'The return of Bergen and Newquay will be extremely popular with both our business and leisure customers.'

He added: '[Bergen is] a favourite for a short city break and for those wishing to visit Norway's fjord country.'

Flybe also offers flights to Belfast, Limoges, Jersey and other locations from Newcastle, as well as services to various destinations from airports such as Durham Tees Valley, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Liverpool in northern England.
