The latest World Travel Awards programme reached its climax at an event in Doha, Qatar this month, when India was named the leading global destination.

Jamaica was voted the best country to visit during a cruise holiday and for a honeymoon, while Mauritius and Sharm el Sheikh topped the categories covering islands and diving hotspots respectively.

InterContinental Hotels and Resorts picked up the top hotel brand accolade and the Burj al Arab in Dubai was named the world's leading hotel.

The awards programme also covered airlines, with Etihad Airways being recognised as the top carrier overall and Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific and Virgin Atlantic picking up honours for their business class, economy class and inflight entertainment offerings respectively.

Graham Cooke, president and founder of the World Travel Awards, noted that the past year provided many challenges for the industry.

'Our grand final winners have all demonstrated their world-class pedigree over this period and are currently spearheading the global recovery of travel and tourism,' he added.
