Airbus enjoys best ever year in 2011

Airbus has announced that 2011 was the most successful year in its history, with record order and delivery numbers.

The manufacturer delivered 534 commercial planes to 88 customers, beating its previous record, set in 2010, by 24 aircraft.

A record 421 single-aisle liners changed hands between the company and its airline clients, as well as 26 A380s, compared to 18 the year before.

The A320neo attracted 1,226 firm sales, making it the fastest-selling airliner ever, according to Airbus.

Tom Enders, the company's president and chief executive officer, said: 'Airbus' record order intake is the result of our strategic decision for A320neo.

'With this innovation we established a new industry standard, appreciated by our customers and followed by the competition.'

Mr Enders also said the manufacturer is well prepared for the future and is set to hire more than 4,000 skilled workers in 2012.

The Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger plane, is currently being used by carriers such as Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Emirates to operate flights to several major cities around the world.
